In the music industry, it pays to have famous friends. Mark Ronson would certainly agree: The producer and DJ, best known for his work with Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse, has dropped one hell of a third album, armed with a motley crew of guests from all over the musical radar.
"Record Collection" has all the punch and freshness of 2007's "Version," but while that album was filled with retro-style covers, this one is bursting with an eclectic mix of everything from synth-pop to alternative hip-hop. Ronson surprises his listeners on every track, but he keeps a thread running through the album so that you never quite forget what you're listening to.
Cons A couple of choruses get irritating upon repeat listens and Ronson's instrumental tracks are rather "meh."
Ronson's fascination with the '80s comes out in full force on "Record Collection." He combines the voices of '80s legends with the authentic sounds of old-school synthesizers that he buys on eBay. Moments in the mournful "Somebody to Love Me," featuring Boy George and Andrew Wyatt of Miike Snow, evoke the decade of synth-drenched power ballads particularly well - Ronson himself called this song the "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me 2010." On "You Gave Me Nothing," one of my favorite tracks on the album, ex-Pipettes singer Rose Elinor Dougall sounds an awful lot like a female Morrissey.
I'm not kidding: On "Record Collection," you'll hear everyone from Q-Tip to Boy George, from D'Angelo to Duran Duran. And the best thing of all? This hodgepodge group works together seamlessly, as if they've been making music together for years.

Amid the atmosphere of leg warmers and parachute pants, Ronson still slips in reminders of what decade we're actually in. Neo-soul legend D'Angelo sounds like Cee-Lo Green on "Glass Mountain Trust," whereas Andrew Wyatt on "Somebody to Love Me" embraces the staccato vocal style of Vampire Weekend. "Bang Bang Bang," the album's standout track, debuted at number six on the U.K. singles chart, and for good reason. The ridiculously danceable track combines Q-Tip's familiar flow with Santigold sound-alike Amanda Warner, all backed by Ronson's eBay synths and lines from the French nursery rhyme "Alouette." The video for the song, which frames Ronson and his guests as part of a Japanese game show, is definitely worth checking out.
Pros Unique awesome line-up of guest artists,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], punchy danceable beats and a hefty dose of ‘80s vocals and synths.

Ronson only sings on a couple songs and has four instrumental pieces on the record, one of which ("The Colour of Crumar") sounds like a Super Mario jingle combined with an ice cream truck tune. While Ronson doesn't have the best voice himself, his expertise as a producer gives him a free pass: He's like the benchwarmer on his high school football team who happens to be a baller at fantasy football.
