NFL Week 5 Picks: Cleveland rookie safety T.J. Ward fined $15,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 for vicious hit (video) Published: Sunday, October 10, 2010,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 3:21 AM Updated: Wednesday, October 13, 2010, 10:50 AM Cleveland rookie safety T.J. Ward (Oregon) came under some scrutiny last week after he laid a big hit on Cincinnati wide receiver Josh Shipley in the end zone during the Browns' 23-20 victory over the Bengals.
Ward was fined $15,000 for the hit which drew a penalty that the Bengals capitalized on for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Shipley ran a route into the end zone on third down and was targeted by quarterback Carson Palmer. The ball and Ward reached Shipley at about the same time with both receiver and ball ending up on the ground.
The hit could have been much more vicious than it was and it seemed as if Ward held up bit. What made the shot illegal, however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is that Ward lowered his right shoulder and hit Shipley in the head. Had Ward led helmet-to-helmet, the results could have been much more serious.
Shipley suffered a concussion on the play. The Bengals scored on the next play.
After the game, Ward said he was in a no-win situation.
"There was only a couple things I could do,” he told reporters, “either hit him or move completely out of the way. And I can't do that."
Ward later said that he didn’t maliciously intend to hurt Shipley, and he hit was simply a part of the game.
"The way it happened, I didn't really try to hit him with everything I had,” he told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “But still it was a pretty violent hit. I wasn't trying to aim for his helmet in any way. I just hit what I saw. It all happened so fast."

WEEK 5 PICKS
Overall: 42-20 (.677)

Genius pick: St. Louis over Seattle: The Rams hadn’t defeated the Seahawks in years but after watching both of Seattle’s wins live I came away feeling like their opponent lost more than they had won.
